“Crabby Snacks and Homemades”

Happy Sunday!

How was your weekend?

Todd and I started off our weekend by sipping on delicious wine at Keel and Curley Winery with friends Friday night.

Then on Saturday, my Mom and I met up with my best friend Arlene and we went to see the movie Silver Linings Playbook. I knew the movie was nominated for an Oscar, and that Robert De Niro was in it, but that’s all I knew about the movie. I wasn’t prepared for the story, nor the fact that I was going to like it so much. What a fantastic movie!

I was intrigued by a line that the Mother Doloris (Jacki Weaver) kept repeating. Every Sunday during the football games, she’d say “I’m making crabby snacks and homemades”.

Crabby snacks? Are they like crabby patties? I’m pretty certain they are not. The memorable line led me to research and Google what exactly crabby snacks and homemades are.

Crabby snacks are, to quote the Matthew Quick novel on which Silver Linings Playbook was adapted, “buttered crabmeat and orange cheese on English muffins.” Homemades are homemade egg pastas.

We love crab. So my mission was to go home and make my own crabby snacks.

The recipes I found online said to use English muffins, but I still have a plethora of delicious Stonefire flatbreads, so I decided to substitute them for the muffins.

Crabby Snacks

Stonefire flatbreads 3 TBS butter
6 ounce can crabmeat, drained
5 ounce jar Kraft Old English cheese spread
1 TBS mayonnaise
1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp chopped parsley
1/2 tsp onion powder
2 TBS Tabasco tomato, chopped

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut the flatbreads into pieces and place on a cookie sheet.

In a small bowl, add the butter, cheese spread, mayo, Tabasco, and seasonings and mix well. Then add in the crab meat until well combined. Spread the crab mixture on the flatbread pieces.

Bake for about 10-12 minutes until the cheese starts bubbling. Garnish with chopped tomatoes and enjoy.

I don’t have enough time or patience to even try my hand at the “homemades”. I’ve never tried making pasta from scratch, so they will have to wait a few years. But, if you need a fun appetizer for your Oscar party, give crabby snacks a whirl!

Just don’t forget the martinis to go along with them!

Have a wonderful evening. ;)
